Henry Cavill’s $75 Million James Bond Replacement Heads to New Streaming Home

For someone who got the opportunity to play Superman in three movies, Henry Cavill has also had his share of bad luck. He dropped out of his hit Netflix show The Witcher; he appeared in only one Mission: Impossible movie; he has at least two major failed franchise-starters under his belt. The more recent of them, Matthew Vaughn‘s Argylle, performed quite poorly in theaters. But, before that, he starred in Guy Ritchie‘s spy film The Man from U.N.C.L.E. Like the Mission: Impossible films, it was adapted from a television show, but was hardly as successful as it needed to be to spawn sequels. The Man from U.N.C.L.E. has, however, been consistently popular on home video, and before Cavill attempts to launch two new franchises in the coming years, you can check it out on Prime Video beginning October 27.

Released a decade ago, when Ritchie was fully committed to creating lasting franchises for himself, The Man from U.N.C.L.E. also featured Armie Hammer and Alicia Vikander. It was produced on a reported budget of $75 million, but barely managed to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the worldwide box office. Although it has certainly found its audience in the years since, the movie opened to mixed reviews. It currently holds a 68% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E. tries to distract from an unremarkable story with charismatic stars and fizzy set pieces, adding up to an uneven action thriller with just enough style to overcome its lack of substance.”

Ritchie and Cavill Have Developed a Strong Partnership

Around this time, Ritchie also directed King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, The Gentlemen, and Aladdin. Since then, the filmmaker has released Wrath of Man, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and most recently, Fountain of Youth. Cavill will reunite with him on the upcoming film In the Grey, before starring in three franchise films — Voltron, Highlander, and Enola Holmes 3. Cavill last headlined The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare for Ritchie, but like The Man from U.N.C.L.E., the movie ended up underperforming at the box office and likely killing all chances of a sequel.
