Netflix Combines VFX Businesses Under Unified ‘Eyeline’ Brand
Nearly four years after acquiring Scanline VFX, Netflix is bringing together the visual effects operations of Scanline and the Eyeline Studios production and tools team under one brand: Eyeline.
The move to merge Scanline VFX and Eyeline Studios under one brand “enables us to pioneer new tools, facilitate creative collaboration, and drive the future of filmmaking for the most ambitious storytellers around the world,” Jeffrey Shapiro, CEO of Eyeline, wrote in a blog post about the change.
Scanline VFX and Eyeline Studios have done work on a number of Netflix originals, including “Stranger Things,” “Wednesday” and “Happy Gilmore 2.” However, Netflix continues to operate them as standalone businesses that work with a variety of clients.
Founded 36 years ago, Scanline earned a Scientific and Technical Academy Award for its proprietary fluid simulation software, Flowline, and contributed groundbreaking work to global hits such as Stranger Things, Wednesday, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Godzilla x Kong: A New Empire and Netflix’s latest film, The Woman in Cabin 10. Last month, Scanline won an Emmy for Outstanding Special Visual Effects in a Season or Movie for Disney+’s Andor Season 2.
Scanline’s Eyeline Studios, founded in 2019, pioneered the use of virtual production and volumetric capture, earning the Visual Effects Society’s inaugural Groundbreaking Technology Award for its stage technology, most recently showcased in the creation of Professor Orloff in Wednesday Season 2. The Light Dome — the first of its kind to replicate any real-world lighting condition with exacting realism — was recently used on Happy Gilmore 2 and the upcoming A House of Dynamite. Eyeline has also led the field in applying generative AI to production, most notably in Netflix’s Argentine sci-fi series The Eternaut. Eyeline combines nearly four decades of visual effects artistry with virtual production, AI-enabled tools, and advanced research, according to the company.
The Eyeline team’s work can be seen in upcoming shows and films like Stranger Things Season 5, Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, The Witcher Seasons 4 and 5, ONE PIECE Season 2, Godzilla x Kong: Supernova, Spider-Man Noir, and Daredevil: Born Again Season 2.
