A ‘Sea of Stars’ Reception Under a Custom-Built Dome at the Four Seasons

From the bride: “I’ve always been a fan of early 20th-century design, specifically Art Deco and Bauhaus, so I wanted to incorporate both into our wedding design: not quite as glitzy and flamboyant as Art Deco, but also not as bare-bones and simplistic as Bauhaus, with a focus on elements shared by both of these styles. Sleek geometric forms. Use of modern materials like glass and metals. For example, during the ceremony, our guests were seated on minimalist white chairs with a boldly curved back design. All ninety of these chairs had to be specially flown to Chiang Mai from Phuket. At the reception, we paired transparent ghost chairs with round tables topped by metallic mirrored surfaces that reflected the sparkling lights above, creating a stunning “sea of stars” effect. The menus were a half-circular shape, with Bauhaus-inspired typography. And of course, hovering over everything and everyone was the pièce de résistance: a magnificent dome of light that was custom-built at the heart of the Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai just for our wedding. Before this occasion, a structure of this size and scale had never been constructed on the grounds of this hotel for any event! A strikingly minimalist twist on the classic chandelier, also custom-made for us, dangled from the center of this massive dome. Instead of the usual crystals and curlicues and elaborate swirls, this 7-foot chandelier was entirely characterized by straight black lines – an homage to our unique Art Deco meets Bauhaus concept.”

My absolute top priority in planning this wedding has always been guest enjoyment. At one point during the design process, when Nitcha (designer from Wedding Bliss team) showed me that the signs at the wedding would be made of a mirrored material, I even asked her to use those “skinnifying” mirrors that make people look longer and leaner, so that my guests would feel good when they caught sight of their own reflections! That’s how serious I was about making sure my guests were happy. Lyle and I have attended many gorgeous destination weddings together all around the world, from Mexico to Sicily, so by the time I began planning my own wedding, I was a very experienced wedding guest. Drawing upon my own experiences, I concluded that wedding guests primarily care about two things: visual spectacle and social connection. These were the two most important things that I wanted our friends and family to experience at our wedding. In terms of visual spectacle, I knew I could count on the geniuses at the Wedding Bliss Thailand for the perfect venue, and my wedding dress designer (Dita, founder and creative director of Honeysuckle Atelier) for an unforgettable dress.

As for social connection, this was such a rare opportunity for us to bring together our amazing friends from Taipei, San Francisco, and London, so we didn’t want to waste it! I was extremely careful and intentional in crafting the seating arrangements for both the welcome dinner and the reception dinner. On both nights, I made sure that every guest would be seated near a mixture of people: some that they already knew (so that they would feel comfortable), and some that they didn’t know yet but I felt like they would get along with (so that they would make new friends and new connections). Having to satisfy both conditions for each guest’s seat made the seating charts feel like a giant Sudoku puzzle!

We also set up a dance competition between two groups of friends during the reception – a big “Team Taipei vs. Team SF” dance-off. The competitive aspect created a fun talking point and conversation starter for the whole wedding weekend. Before the showdown (in fact, even before the wedding weekend started), members of the two rival teams were already campaigning for votes, and other guests were taking bets on which team would emerge victorious; after the competition, the controversial decision to award Team Taipei the victory triggered many lively debates (and more dance battles) at the after-party.
