Russell Crowe’s Controversial $160 Million Biblical Epic Is Streaming for Free
Star Russell Crowe headlined a couple of major period epics following the grand success of Ridley Scott‘s Gladiator, which won him a Best Actor Oscar, but neither movie — Robin Hood nor Noah — was quite as successful. Robin Hood was his last film with Scott, whom he’s openly criticizing now after having been left out of Gladiator II. Noah, on the other hand, was directed by Darren Aronofsky as his major blank check project following the Oscar-winning success of Black Swan. The Biblical epic proved to be controversial, as most films that deal with religious themes are, and it wasn’t as commercially successful or culturally impactful as Mel Gibson‘s The Passion of the Christ. But it remains Crowe’s last major hit, and it’s now streaming for free on the Pluto TV service. However, audiences don’t have much time to watch it as it’ll leave Pluto by the end of the month.
Released in 2014, the film grossed around $360 million at the worldwide box office against a reported budget of $160 million. Noah also featured Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman, Ray Winstone and others in supporting roles, and offered a rather imaginative take on the Biblical story of Noah and the Ark. That same year, Crowe’s former partner-in-crime, Scott, released his own Biblical movie, Exodus: Gods and Kings, which earned poor reviews and flopped at the box office. Noah, on the other hand, currently holds a “certified fresh” 75% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, where the critics’ consensus reads, “With sweeping visuals grounded by strong performances in service of a timeless tale told on a human scale, Darren Aronofsky’s Noah brings the Bible epic into the 21st century.” The film’s audience rating, however, is languishing at 41%.
Both Russell Crowe and Darren Aronofsky Are Coming Off Of Box Office Underperformers
This reflects the divisive opinion that it inspired upon release. Not everybody was on board with Aronofsky’s portrayal of the story, which involved rock monsters and an environmental message. Noah was banned in several Middle Eastern countries, as well as China. Aronofsky’s latest film is the far less controversial crime comedy Caught Stealing, starring Austin Butler. The movie underperformed at the box office but earned mostly positive reviews. Crowe, on the other hand, can currently be seen in the period drama Nuremberg, in which he plays the Nazi war criminal Hermann Göring. Like Caught Stealing, Nuremberg has underperformed commercially. You have until the end of this month to watch Noah for free. Stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
