The Top Hand Creams and Lip Balms Purchased During the U.S. Cold Streak

Count on beauty to be a bright spot during a deep freeze.

As cities across the U.S. endured historically cold temperatures lasting from late January through the first week of February, hand cream sales grew during the same period.

Data from predictive commerce insights platform Daash Intelligence shows that online and in-store prestige hand cream sales rose 20 percent from Jan. 25 through Feb. 7 — when temperatures were at their coldest — versus the 13 days prior. Daash’s sales estimates are generated by scraping consumer behavior panels, publicly available retailer data, ad spend and social data.

L’Occitane’s Nourishing and Protective Shea Butter Hand Cream, $34, was the top seller during the freeze, comprising 16.1 percent market share. The next most popular hand cream, belonging to Moroccanoil, made up 11 percent share.

Lip balm sales, on the other hand, declined 8 percent during the period versus the two weeks prior, but Summer Fridays’ Lip Butter Balm Treatment came out on top in any case, with 23.6 percent market share. Lip balms are decidedly more dominated by heroes than hand creams, with the next most popular product earning 22.6 percent market share.
