‘Live With Kelly and Mark’ Parody ‘Song Sung Blue’ in Promo for Post-Oscar Special (EXCLUSIVE)
Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos channel Kate Hudson and Hugh Jackman — and more specifically, their “Song Sung Blue” Neil Diamond band tribute characters — in a new promo for Monday’s “Live With Kelly and Mark” post-Oscars special. And Variety has a first look at the bedazzled, rhinestone-laded production.
The Oscar parody has become a part of the “Live” tradition — last year, Ripa starred as Glinda in a sendup of “Wicked.” For the 2026 edition, the “Live” producers couldn’t resist a little “Sweet Caroline” (BOM! BOM! BOM!) in taking on “Song Sung Blue.”
The ambitious idea this year: Re-create the trailer for “Song Sung Blue,” replacing Hudson and Jackman with Ripa and Consuelos — in full costume — throughout key moments.
“Basically they wanted us to act out the entire movie,” Ripa told Variety. “We had so many costumes! Initially we had 32 looks between the both of us. I said, I understand 32 looks over the course of a two-hour movie. But this is a two minute clip! So we had to limit some of these looks.”
Added Consuelos: “Man, did they really nail it this year.”
Based on Greg Koh’s 2008 documentary of the same name, “Song Sung Blue” follows Jackman and Hudson as Milwaukee couple Mike and Claire Sardina, down-on-their-luck musicians who became local icons by performing Neil Diamond songs as “Lightning & Thunder.” In the “Live” parody, Ripa and Consuelos call themselves “Glitz & Glamour.”
Ripa and Consuelos said it was easy to mimic the “Song Sung Blue” characters since those Neil Diamond songs are so well known.
“It’s a lot of work, but it’s worth it,” Ripa said. “And I think ‘Song Sung Blue’ is such a movie that everybody really, universally loved. There’s something in it for everyone. There’s the drama, there’s the comedy, there’s the music aspect to it. I like to call it a ‘feel-mostly-good story.’”
“Live With Kelly and Mark” will once again go live with its “After the Oscars” show on Monday, March 16 — the day after the Oscars — at 6 a.m. PT/9 a.m. ET from the Dolby Theatre on Hollywood, less than seven hours after the Oscars sign off at the venue. Guests will include Wyclef Jean and Andra Day with the music, while comedian and impressionist Matt Friend will report for the show from the red carpet.
Also, Leanne Morgan will be on hand to talk about the awards show’s biggest moments, while Carson Kressley will discuss the night’s fashion hits and misses. Also set to join in: DJ Cassidy.
Then there’s also Ripa’s and Consuelos’ interview with host Conan O’Brien, which will take place immediately after the ceremony.
Ripa and Consuelos will also once again be stationed backstage during the Oscars to talk with winners immediately after they get their trophy.
“We have to be prepared for literally anyone,” Ripa said. “If there’s one thing the Academy Awards has taught me, it is to be prepared for anyone to come backstage. It doesn’t matter who the favorite is. It doesn’t matter who won the BAFTA. It doesn’t matter who won all the other shows. Anything can happen!”
The road to the Academy Awards on “Live With Kelly and Mark” includes this Friday’s pre-Oscars show, with will include past Oscar winner Adrien Brody, as well as Oscars Governors Ball official chef Wolfgang Puck offering a special cooking demo on how to make his chicken pot pie.
“Live With Kelly and Mark” remains the most-watched entertainment talk show on television. “Live with Kelly and Mark” is distributed in national syndication by Disney Entertainment. The show, produced by WABC-TV, is executive produced by Michael Gelman and Ripa.
