Andrew McLaren: The Good Guy Bad Guy
HBO Star, Producer of Rizo, and the Real-Life Operative Who Lived What Hollywood Only Pretends

When Andrew McLaren walks into the room, there’s an unmistakable energy — a blend of quiet intensity and calm authority. He’s the kind of man who has lived several lives before stepping in front of the camera, and perhaps that’s what makes him so captivating to watch.
He’s a U.S. Marine veteran, counterterrorism operative, producer, actor, father of three — and a man whose path to Hollywood is anything but ordinary. His worldview was shaped early: his uncle served as an American Diplomat to Israel, a connection that ignited his lifelong admiration for the heroism and discipline of the Israeli Defense Forces.
Today, McLaren is one of HBO’s most recognizable personalities from Chrome Underground, and the producer of the acclaimed HBO-acquired 2021 drama Rizo — all while remaining grounded in the experiences of someone who has seen the world’s darkest corners…and defended the vulnerable within them.

THE GOOD BAD GUY
“A legendary undercover cop once told me: sheepdogs protect the flock, but to hunt the wolf — you must be a hunter, not just a protector,” McLaren says. “That resonated with me.”
He laughs when he says he prefers calling it the War Department instead of the Department of Defense.
“It puts our enemies on notice that we’re actively going after them.”
For a man who has lived both defense and offense, the phrase takes on a much deeper meaning.
FROM WAR ZONES TO HOLLYWOOD
Conceived in California and born in Staten Island, McLaren spent his earliest days in a Manhattan orphanage before being adopted by a Yonkers family. He worked as a successful fashion model before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in October 2001 — after witnessing the September 11th attacks from Manhattan.
His service was intense, global, and defining:
- Deployed to the Liberian Civil War as part of an elite anti-terrorism Marine unit.
- Trained the Iraqi Army in 2005 during one of the most dangerous periods of the Iraq War.
- Joined Blackwater USA in 2006, providing diplomatic security and protecting American officials in Iraq.
- Lived in Hong Kong, conducting private global security operations.
- Survived imprisonment and torture in a foreign prison during a mission (location intentionally not named).
- Conducted child rescues and participated in successful anti–human trafficking operations worldwide.
“Some experiences never leave you,” he says. “Helping kids is the thing I’m proudest of.”
His global experience eventually opened the door to Hollywood.
“I started consulting and ghostwriting to bring authenticity to directors. Eventually, they put me in front of the camera — and that changed everything.”
HOLLYWOOD’S HARD EDGE
McLaren’s breakout came on NBC’s Stars Earn Stripes alongside “American Sniper” Chris Kyle, raising hundreds of thousands for U.S. military and first responder charities.
He later co-starred in the award-winning Battle For Haditha, and eventually became the
steel-nerved lead of HBO’s Chrome Underground, a high-stakes international series filmed in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and other volatile environments.
He is also the producer of Rizo — the 2021 HBO-acquired drama about an Afro-Latina actress chasing her big break, praised for its emotional depth and representation.
It is here that McLaren became known as Hollywood’s “good bad guy” — the man who looks dangerous but uses danger for good.

Location
One of McLaren’s most striking photo sessions took place at Russian Samovar Restaurant in Times Square, at the exact table where the Rat Pack called their home The Sinatra Table in New York — an iconic cultural institution run by Vlada, whose life story mirrors the complexity of global conflict.
Vlada is Russian.
Her husband is Ukrainian — and a former member of the Russian military. Together they openly support Ukraine and pray for peace.
“Their family represents exactly what the world needs,” McLaren says. “Humanity over politics. Peace over division.”
The shoot — complete with a marble chessboard, heavy fur coat, and McLaren’s signature intensity — captures the duality of his life: strategy and strength, grit and intellect.
HOW HE WANTS TO BE REMEMBERED
When asked the signature GQ question — how he hopes to be remembered — McLaren doesn’t hesitate.
“As a Dad who raised his three kids with all his heart,” he says. Zoe. “Andrew Jr., Alex, , — they’re my life.
Only mention my 3 kids
Faith anchors him.
“I believe in God without hesitation. My parents taught me discipline and critical thinking. It’s easy to join an ideological tribe and stay in an echo chamber. But the world needs more independent thinkers.”
He supports conservation of endangered species, arts programs for youth, and humanitarian efforts addressing poverty, hunger, and homelessness.

THE GOOD BAD GUY, REDEFINED
From Liberia to Iraq, from foreign prisons to New York chessboards, from child rescues to Hollywood sets Andrew McLaren has lived a life no screenplay could capture.
He’s the protector who became a hunter. The warrior who values peace.
The father who carries everything with love.
The good bad guy who’s seen the world at its worst and still believes in its best.
