Blue Jays Could Still Win Pete Alonso Sweepstakes After Reported Mets Offer

The Pete Alonso sweepstakes are so close to wrapping up -- yet, still so far away.
As of now, the New York Mets remain the favorites to bring Alonso back for 2025. However, their latest offer is nowhere near what he expects or wants.
Reportedly, the Mets offered Alonso a three-year, $70 million deal. He very swiftly turned down their latest deal, but this opens the door for the Toronto Blue Jays to swoop in and snatch him.
This offer would have paid Alonso $23.3 million per year, and it shows he wasn't happy with the term or dollar amount. The Blue Jays know they must offer closer to $100 million if they wish to land Alonso.
Alonso's current market value is a six-year deal worth $174 million -- an average of $29 million per year. The Blue Jays should be looking to offer Alonso four years for $116 million.
This offer would give Alonso his market price for average annual value while also not committing to him for as long as six years. The Blue Jays could even choose to make the contract heavier in the front to help sell it to Alonso they are trying to win now.
Signing Alonso would allow the Blue Jays to play him at first base full time and shift Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to strictly be the designated hitter. This move would also help Toronto convince Guerrero to stay after the 2025 and sign an extension.
To put it simply: This is an opportunity the Blue Jays can't afford to lose. Even with signing Anthony Santander, this is the time to really push to win the American League East. A four-year, $116 million contract could be just enough to get the deal done.
