Blumhouse’s Unique Sci-Fi Horror Sequel Returns to Streaming Charts as Third Movie Gains Momentum
Last week was a difficult one for Blumhouse fans, after it was revealed that Universal would be scrapping the production company’s M3GAN spin-off, Soulm8te, just a few weeks ahead of its January 9 premiere. Maybe that’s why audiences around the globe are taking to Max to show their appreciation for Jason Blum’s company by streaming its beloved comedy horror sequel, Happy Death Day 2U. According to FlixPatrol, the title clocked in at the sixth spot on the highly sought-after Top 10 chart, giving it a solid boost a solid six years since it came out. It has since dropped to the number 12 spot, which is still far from shabby. With a third installment on the way, it seems viewers are telling the Blumhouse team they have their support whenever the film is ready to release.
In 2017, Drop filmmaker, stepped into the spotlight as the helmer of his fourth feature-length production, Happy Death Day. Blending sci-fi with horror and a hefty helping of dark comedy, the film follows a college student named Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe), who is sucked into a time loop and forced to relive her birthday over and over again after being murdered by a killer wearing a baby mask. In order to break the loop and put an end to her own murder, she realizes she must solve the case and uncover the truth about the person hiding behind the baby mask.
Happy Death Day was a breakaway hit for Universal that no one saw coming. Against its $4.8 million production budget, the title raked in a staggering $125.5 million at the global box office, quickly setting it up for a sequel. Two years later, Happy Death Day 2U was released, with Rothe reprising her role as Tree and Landon returning as the director. Trapped in another time loop nightmare, Tree discovers that she’s trapped in another parallel universe where her friends all have different personalities, her boyfriend is in love with someone else, and — worst of all — another killer is on her trail.
The Future of ‘Happy Death Day’
For years, the franchise’s followers have been clamoring for Universal and Blumhouse to move forward with a third installment. Although we don’t have a release date, the movie is officially in the works, with Rothe recently telling Collider’s Aidan Kelley,
“But all I can say about it is Chris has it all mapped out and as is so evident from the first two movies he’s just a brilliant genius man. All I can say is it will finish Tree’s journey, it will take the audience to places they weren’t expecting to go and never been before but it will still be kind of the same amazing cast of characters, the same amount of thrills, chills, but also big laughs and also big emotions.”
