Converse Redefines the Classic Chuck Taylor With the New Premium First String Collection
Converse has released a new premium collection named “First String.” The collection seeks to redefine the classic Chuck Taylor for a modern era, merging premium materials, refined construction, and contemporary design details.
The debut collection features three elevated models of the signature Chuck style: a First String Chuck in vintage-washed heavyweight canvas, premium brown leather, and Japanese tropical knit.

“It’s not about doing archival reissues for the sake of history — it’s about celebrating silhouettes like the Chuck Taylor by studying their purest expressions over the decades, and then thoughtfully elevating them into something that feels wearable, relevant, and hopefully highly sought-after today,” said Matt Sleep, design director of Energy Collaborations and Special Projects at Converse.
Converse has not only updated the shoe’s design but also prioritized wearability during the creation process. The company said the sneakers in the First String collection were created with long-term comfort and durability in mind.

To ensure optimal underfoot comfort, each pair features a Vibram outsole for high-performance traction and temperature regulation, along with a molded sockliner made from Converse CX foam and Nike Air cushioning. The design also includes a wider, modern fit.
Attention to detail defines this collection, with Converse meticulously refining every aspect —from the shoe’s shape and dimensions to its toe spring and width. The sneakers now feature added weight and reinforced structure, including elevated foxing tapes, refined textiles, and leather linings. The toe cap has been adjusted for a shorter shape, while a lace keeper has been added to stabilize the tongue, and the eyerow pattern has been expanded to reduce the tongue opening for a more secure fit.

The Chuck’s pinstripes have also been updated to a tonal wheeled aesthetic, while the license plate has been enlarged as an ode to the late 1950s iterations. The collar top-line has been reshaped to create a refined silhouette, and the eyelets have also been enhanced to appear more polished for an elevated look. The First String’s elevated approach extends to its packaging, which includes a two-piece premium heavyweight cardboard box inspired by vintage designs, a dust bag, and a cardboard sleeve.
The Converse First String collection is available for purchase in stores now , with additional colorways set to launch in November.
