‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ Holds No. 1 at Korea Box Office as ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Opens Strong
Japanese blockbuster “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle” remained on top of the Korean box office for a third weekend, grossing $3.8 million from 499,120 admissions between Sept. 5–7. The film has now reached a cumulative $30.7 million from 3.96 million tickets sold, according to Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” debuted in second place with $1.2 million from 164,695 admissions. The latest installment in the horror franchise, directed by Michael Chaves and starring Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga, accounted for 14.8% of the market.
South Korean thriller “Murder Report” opened in third with $1.05 million from 149,954 admissions. Directed by Cho Young-jun and starring Cho Yeo-jeong and Jung Sung-il, the film follows a reporter who agrees to interview a serial killer claiming responsibility for 11 murders.
Brad Pitt racing drama “F1” ranked fourth with $634,000, lifting its cumulative gross to $37.8 million. Local hit “My Daughter is a Zombie” followed with $604,000 for a running total of $37.4 million.
Chinese romance “Just For Meeting You” added $177,000, pushing its cume to $749,000. Directed by Liu Yulin, the film stars Liu Haocun as Xu Nian Nian and Song Weilong as Yang Yi. Adapted from a popular youth novel, it tells the story of a transfer student whose rivalry with a top student turns into a tender romance, raising the question of whether they can confront their long-held feelings when they meet again later in life.
U.S. body horror “Together” opened with $92,000, while Chinese animation “The Three Little Pigs 3” grossed $66,000 in previews.
Japanese mystery horror “Kinki” added $63,000 for a cumulative $1.9 million. Rerelease “E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial” rounded out the top 10 with $34,000, bringing its Korean lifetime gross to $102,000.
The top 10 films collectively grossed $8.3 million over the weekend, down from $9.8 million the previous frame.
