Mark Ruffalo Says ‘I’m Still Waiting to Hear’ About Hulk Return in ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’: ‘I Don’t Know. I Haven’t Read a Script Yet’

Mark Ruffalo is playing coy about his reported return as Hulk in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Variety reported in August that he was circling an appearance as the Hulk in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” although it was unclear at the time if a deal had closed for him to reprise his fan favorite superhero. Ruffalo said in a new interview with Entertainment Tonight that his return remains unclear even to him.

“I don’t know! I’m still waiting to hear,” Ruffalo responded when ET expressed excitement over him “stepping back into the Hulk” for the new ‘Spider-Man” movie. “I haven’t read a script yet. If it does happen, it would be incredible.”

“I grew up with this. It’s changed my life in the best ways,” Ruffalo added. “Each time it’s this new director and new world… it’s so exciting. There’s nothing else like it. Maybe television, but a TV show doesn’t change its whole world from one director to the next, and that’s whats exciting about Marvel.”

Ruffalo’s last appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was a supporting role in the 2022 Disney+ series “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law.” His last Marvel movie was 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is the fourth standalone movie centered around Tom Holland’s web-slinger. Holland is back alongside franchise mainstays Zendaya, who plays Peter Parker’s girlfriend M.J. Jones-Watson, and Jacob Batalon, as his best friend Ned Leeds. Jon Bernthal’s Punisher is confirmed to have a role in the tentpole, while newcomers include Sadie Sink, Trammel Tillman and  Liza Colón-Zayas. The film is being directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously dabbled in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.”

“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to open in theaters July 31 from Sony.
