Netflix’s Biggest Movie Ever Is Coming to SCAD AnimationFest

If you’re in Georgia this month, you may want to consider stopping by the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for a major movie event. SCAD has announced that its annual AnimationFest, a three-day festival highlighting film and TV animation, will be returning to Atlanta from September 25 to September 27. While there will be a slew of animated projects being shown, the highlight will undoubtedly be the honoring and screening of Netflix’s smash-hit, KPop Demon Hunters.

“SCAD AnimationFest returns to SCADshow with a delicious mix of childhood nostalgia and the new sensations lighting up today’s feeds,” SCAD president and founder Paula Wallace said in a statement. “This year, SCAD salutes the legends behind Phineas and Ferb, awards the wildly popular KPop Demon Hunters, and welcomes everyone’s favorite Tiny Chef.” AnimationFest will also feature panels from Amazon MGM Studios/Prime Video, Warner Bros., and Netflix, with additional presentations from Disney and Crunchyroll.

While KPop Demon Hunters and Phineas and Ferb will be the highlights of the event, including post-screening Q&As with the creators, don’t sleep on some other moments as well. This includes DC’s highly anticipated Batman animated film Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, as well as a new look at Prime Video’s upcoming fantasy adventure series The Mighty Nein. Both of these presentations will also include post-screening talks. “This year’s programming reflects the many professional paths our SCAD students take,” said SCAD director and producer Mollie Brock.

‘KPop Demon Hunters’ Has Become a Huge Success

Despite SCAD highlighting many animated projects, the inclusion of KPop Demon Hunters will undoubtedly be the biggest hit — it also makes sense given that SCAD currently has the world’s only university-based animation studio. The Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation film, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Applehans, follows a K-pop group, Huntr/x, that is also the latest in a legacy line of demon hunters. The musical trio ends up fighting off against a male K-pop group who are secretly demons, but it becomes clear that Huntr/x has some demons — and secrets — of its own.

KPop Demon Hunters burst on the scene when it was released on Netflix, and has become the most-watched film of all time on the streamer with approximately 266 million hours viewed. This translates to over 443 million hours watched. The film is still breaking records and doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. It should be unsurprising, then, that Netflix and Sony have already greenlit a sequel to the film, so it seems that the wait won’t be long for more adventures from Huntr/x.

SCAD AnimationFest will take place in Atlanta from September 25 to September 27. KPop Demon Hunters is streaming now.
