One of the Most Overlooked ’90s Disaster Movies Is Erupting on Hulu Next Month
There was a time when Hollywood churned out disaster movies that showcased how humanity would react and persevere in an end-of-the-world situation in a modern setting. One of these films is 1997’s Volcano, directed by Mick Jackson. This movie tends to be an overlooked title, as it was released the same year as Dante’s Peak, but it still features the “what if” scenario of a random volcano emerging in a major U.S. city. It will be entering a new streaming platform next year.
Volcano will be available on Hulu starting January 1, 2026, giving viewers a chance to watch this disaster movie. Starring Men in Black‘s Tommy Lee Jones and Chicago P.D.’s Anne Heche, the film is about a volcano emerging in Los Angeles following an earthquake, with geological events showing signs of a potential eruption. When the volcano does erupt, Michael Roark (Jones) coordinates with emergency personnel to reroute the lava to the ocean.
Since its release in April 1997, Volcano has grossed over $122 million at the global box office, but was poorly received by critics and audiences, earning a 48% critics’ score and a 32% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Volcano also stars Don Cheadle (Secret Invasion), Gaby Hoffmann (The Mastermind), and Keith David (Rick and Morty). Meanwhile, the soundtrack was composed by Alan Silvestri, known for his work on Avengers: Endgame, Back to the Future, and 2002’s Lilo & Stitch.
Other Films Like ‘Volcano’
Volcano is one of many disaster movies released over the years. If you’re after films with a similar set-up, the often-compared Dante’s Peak — which came out in the same year but stars Pierce Brosnan, Linda Hamilton, and Charles Hallahan — is a solid option. Volcano was set in Los Angeles, however this one is set in the fictional town of Dante’s Peak, which is located near a strato-volcano. Dante’s Peak received a lower critics’ score than Volcano, a 28%, but a slightly higher audience score of 39% on Rotten Tomatoes.
But if you want a disaster film set in Los Angeles, then 2015’s San Andreas is the film for you. Starring Dwayne Johnson, this movie is about the real titular California fault line. It depicts a scenario in which it shifts, causing major destruction that affects not only L.A., but also San Francisco and the surrounding areas. This movie grossed over $474 million at the box office, and according to Slash Film, plans for a sequel were in place but it never came to fruition.
Volcano will erupt on Hulu on January 1, 2026. In the meantime, you can catch it on Prime Video. Follow Collider to stay updated.
