‘Property Brothers’ Jonathan Scott Almost Lost Zooey Deschanel Before This Surprising Song Changed Everything
Jonathan Scott just proved that sometimes love is all about the perfect soundtrack. The Property Brothers star revealed the song that saved him from a potential ghosting disaster with New Girl’s Zooey Deschanel — and it involves horseback, the Rockies, and a Canadian folk classic.
After hitting it off post-Carpool Karaoke, Jonathan and Zooey were texting daily — until a three-day mountain trip left her thinking he’d vanished. But Jonathan had a plan: he recorded a video of himself on horseback, playing her favorite song, Four Strong Winds, atop the Rockies. The gesture not only won her back but also tied into a song cherished by the Scott family for generations, blending romance, adventure, and a touch of Scott family nostalgia.
While reminiscing about growing up on the ranch with his brother, Drew, and their parents, Jim and Joanne, Jonathan shared the sweet way he was able to further his relationship with the beloved actress. “So we started talking every day, and we hit it off. And then I went up into the mountains for three days, and she thought I ghosted her,” he told his family. “Oh, she’s thinking this jerk, you know. He’s not returning my messages. But she had told me about this Canadian folk song that she really loved, and so I did a selfie video on horseback atop the Rocky Mountains. And the very first text i sent when i came down to where there was cell service was I texted her that video.” The song that brought them together was called “Four Strong Winds,” and it just so happens to have a deeper connection to the entire Scott family.
‘Four Strong Winds’ Holds Great Value to the Scott Family
Jonathan and Zooey may not have said “I do” just yet, but their love story truly was love at first Carpool. Jonathan’s revelation about sending Zooey the Canadian folk song she adored proved that he was committed to making their love grow from the very start. After three days away, Jonathan could have texted anyone first — even family — but making Zooey the priority showed his devotion. Why he didn’t warn her about the trip? That’s a story for another family video.
“Four Strong Winds” is not just any song. It has a deeper meaning for the entire Scott family. During the same conversation, it was revealed that Jonathan and Drew’s dad used to play it on guitar. The writer, Ian Tyson, was a neighbor rancher and their mother’s client. Tyson originally penned the song in 1961 after spending an evening with legendary singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. Written in 20 minutes, the song became an influential song in folk music. The lyrics include “Four strong winds that blow lonely,” and “I’ll look for you if I’m ever back this way.” Those lyrics alone tell the story of the almost ghosting moment.
Jonathan and Drew Scott Live by the Cowboy Code
With Chasing the West allowing Jonathan and Drew a chance to take a trip down memory lane while helping others find their dream ranch life, it’s been an opportunity to dive deeper into the family’s history. They are a tight-knit family. During their heartwarming family sit-down, their ability to revisit untold stories from their childhood growing up on a ranch goes beyond what can be shared on HGTV. Not only do you get to hear the Property Brothers recount their tales, you get their parents’ perspective as well.
Ranch life was ingrained in them and when Drew joked about the “free labor” they gave their parents as kids, their father reminded them about the “free room and board” they got in exchange. Inspired through their work today is “The Code of the West,” also known as the Cowboy Code. These include “live each day with courage, take pride in your work, always finish what you start, do what has to be done, be tough, but fair, when you make a promise, keep it, ride for the brand, talk less and say more, remember some things aren’t for sale, and know where to draw the line.”
Chasing the West airs Wednesdays at 9:00pm on HGTV. All episodes are available to stream on HBO Max.
