Taylor Sheridan’s Underrated Spy Series Dominates Global Streaming Ahead of Season 3
There is an argument to be made to crown Taylor Sheridan the king of modern television, and one can hardly argue against it when evidence is presented. Several of his most popular projects, like Yellowstone, have curated dedicated fanbases across the globe. Sheridan’s creative skill is impressive, with an ability to create an engaging story each time, like he did with his female-led spy drama, Special Ops: Lioness. The well-crafted spy thriller is headlined by Zoe Saldaña as senior case officer Joe McNamara of the Lioness program and Nicole Kidman as her supervisor, Kaitlyn Meade. Just like other Sheridan shows, Lioness is capable of drawing viewers worldwide and not only on its streaming home, Paramount+, but across multiple platforms. The series is making a beeline for global streaming dominance according to FlixPatrol.
Across several platforms, including Claro Video, Catchplay+ and Starz, Lioness is making a statement as it features prominently in the Top 10. Lioness is a modern-day spy series that follows the dangerous covert missions of a CIA operation code named the Lioness program. Saldaña’s Joe leads the program where she recruits female operatives to infiltrate dangerous organizations using mainly false identities. Recruiting a new Lioness such as Cruz Manuelos (Laysla De Oliveira), Joe must deploy her best tutorial abilities to bring this operative up to speed efficiently. Joe also needs to balance her responsibilities in the field with her superiors: Kidman’s Meade and the CIA Deputy Director of Operations, Byron Westfield (Michael Kelly). There is also a need to manage her relationship with her husband Neal (Dave Annable), a pediatric surgeon, who she leaves for long periods, and her daughters. One of them, the oldest daughter Kate (Hannah Love Lanier), is borderline combative, just like her mother.
What Does the Future Hold for ‘Lioness’ and Taylor Sheridan?
Lioness, was officially renewed for a third season in September 2025. Filming for the new season began soon after with star-studded behind-the-scenes images being released since then. In October of this year, we reported that the series was filming in Texas, shutting down downtown Fort Worth. The coming season will see fans reunited with the show’s complicated lead character in Joe, even as the show attempts to better its 90% Rotten Tomatoes score if possible. Yellowstone veteran Ian Bohen was added to the cast as a series regular heading into Season 3.
Lioness is one of the most expensive shows in Sheridan’s vast portfolio at Paramount, which includes the aforementioned Yellowstone, Tulsa King, Mayor of Kingstown, 1923, and Landman. While Sheridan’s relationship with Paramount has been incredibly successful, it is a partnership that is sadly at an end after disagreements with Paramount’s new chief executive, David Ellison. These conflicts include Ellison and his new team reportedly challenging the writer-director’s creative control and questioning his hefty production budgets. Sheridan has ultimately left the studio which helped build his empire, moving his operations to NBCUniversal in a massive new deal reportedly worth up to $1 billion — starting in 2029.
The first two seasons of Lioness are streaming on Paramount+. Stay with Collider for more information about Season 3.
