Thank Goodness! ‘Wicked: For Good’ Sets a Digital, DVD, and Blu-Ray Release Dates
Forget red and green — this year the holiday is all about green and pink. Just when you thought you’d unwrapped the last of your presents, Universal Pictures is here to deliver the greatest gift of all — goodness. Today, it’s been announced that Wicked: For Good will soon be flying from the big screen into your home theater, with a digital release date set for December 30. This means that whether you want to add the beloved musical sequel to your digital collection for good or just rent it for a quick trip down the Yellow Brick road, there’s an option for you. Additionally, pre-ordering is now open for the title’s physical release, with the second half of Jon M. Chu’s cinematic adaptation slated to arrive on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD on January 20. Thank goodness!
On top of reliving all the excitement, magic, and heartbreak of the Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo-led film, fans can also expect a multitude of bonus materials to accompany the digital release. In addition to the regular, theatrical release, which grossed more than $485 million at the global box office, those who purchase Wicked: For Good next week will also receive a sing-along version that allows you to hit the high notes with the movie’s all-star cast.
There’s also more than one hour of bonus features, which include a slew of deleted scenes, featurettes, and a nearly hour-long extended behind-the-scenes look at the making of the movie. For the latter, fans can pull the curtain back on Oz and go on a life-changing journey with the familiar faces of Grande, Erivo, and more as they reveal the magic that went into bringing Wicked: For Good to theaters around the globe.
The Vibe Shift Between ‘Wicked’ and ‘Wicked: For Good’
For those who went into last year’s Wicked release having previously read the Gregory Maguire-penned novel that started it all or Stephen Schwartz’s Tony Award-winning musical, this year’s closing chapter didn’t catch them by surprise. But, for everyone else, the shift in tone between the first part of the story and the second was like a gut punch. Picking up after the events of the first movie, Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Grande) are now living separate lives, with the former considered to be an enemy of Oz and the latter a talking head for the great and powerful Wizard (Jeff Goldblum).
During the sequel, audiences learn how the young farm girl, Dorothy Gale (Bethany Weaver), landed in Oz and how multiple characters from The Wizard of Oz came to be, including the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow. Through numerous ups and downs, Elphaba and Glinda reunite with one another and celebrate the friendship they once had while embracing the darkness and loneliness that will now come with their futures.
Find Wicked: For Good to rent or buy on digital platforms on December 30, with its 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD physical release slated for January 20.
