The Death of Seth Meyers’ Dog Put an End to One of Comedy’s Most Ridiculous Feuds

There is nothing sadder than the loss of a pet, and the death of Seth Meyers pet dog Frisbee last month has many sympathizing for the host of Late Night With Seth Meyers. Meyers posted the news on Instagram, “Thanks for 14 amazing years, girl.” You’d truly have to be a monster to not be moved by the news … or Andy Samberg. In fact, Meyers’ former Saturday Night Live castmate had such a hate-on for Frisbee that he not only had to account for his whereabouts after hearing about Frisbee’s death, but came as close to celebrating the tragedy as one can… and everyone’s talking about it.

Kate McKinnon Wants To Know Where Andy Samberg Was When Seth Meyers’ Dog Frisbee Died

During a recent Entertainment Tonight interview to promote The Roses, Kate McKinnon felt the need to ask Samberg where he was when Frisbee, Meyers’ small Italian Greyhound, had died. Samberg replied, “I didn’t kill Frisbee, much as that would’ve delighted me.” McKinnon pressed further, asking if Samberg even likes dogs, to which he said, “Oh yeah, plenty.” Next, when asked what it was about Frisbee he didn’t like, he answered, “Oh, just the general appearance, and vibe, and, um, essence. And like, feel, and having more talon than foot.”

Then Samberg appeared to switch gears, adding, “You know, you don’t want to be like mucking up someone’s actual passing.” But before he could be accused of, well, having a heart, he added, “But in this instance, it was inarguably pretty funny. Sick burn on Seth and he deserves nothing but pain. Just a bad person.” Meyers being a bad person was the only point McKinnon and Samberg agreed on.

Seth Meyers Confirms Andy Samberg Isn’t a Monster on their ‘Lonely Island and Seth Meyers’ Podcast

The topic of Frisbee’s death, the news coverage surrounding it, and how often references to Samberg’s feud with Frisbee occurred was brought up on Samberg and Meyers’ Lonely Island and Seth Meyers podcast. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think, A, that I would have the privilege of being so inextricably linked to Frisbee’s demise, or that good ol’ Fris would get so much love and coverage. I mean, what a dream come true across the board,” Samberg said. He then added that the “news broke right around my birthday,” which certainly didn’t hurt (Frisbee passed away the day after Samberg’s 47th birthday).

Wait, did Samberg say, “good ol’ Fris”? Yes. “For anyone out there who wants to just make sure, like, people are actually real human beings and are friends,” Samberg added, “you [Meyers] told me before the news broke, and I feel like it was a normal response.” Meyers replied, saying it was exactly what he’d want to hear from a friend. Meyers went further, adding that he was “proud” of Samberg for not letting up on the faux feud, right to the end. “I feel like that would’ve been disrespectful to her, in a lot of ways,” Samberg said, suggesting that Frisbee wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. Meyers, too, feels the same, confirming that “she disliked him too, FWIW” on X in response to an obituary.

Adam Samberg v. Frisbee Joins the Ranks of the Great Celebrity Faux Feuds

One has only to look at the times Andy Samberg has appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to realize that the entire Samberg v. Frisbee feud is nothing more than a bit, as Meyers confirmed above. Reportedly “started” simply because Samberg hadn’t liked Frisbee ever since she was little, and thought she “looked like a rat.” Samberg once quipped, “I have been walking home in New York, drunk at 4 in the morning, and seen rats I like more than Frisbee,” and Meyers tells of the time Samberg returned the Meyers family’s Christmas card he was sent with Frisbee’s face scratched out “like a serial killer.”

Over the years, the feud has had other similar, brilliantly funny moments. In 2020, after Meyers showed Samberg a photo of Frisbee, Andy said he felt overjoyed, because Frisbee looked like she was dead, only for Seth to bring Frisbee on camera for their video chat segment. Frisbee hilariously turned away, with Meyers laughing, “Look how much she hates you. She hates you so much.” Samberg called out to Frisbee, saying, “It’s all in good fun, you’re a good dog” before flashing a stick note with the words “Frisbee sucks.” In March 2023, when guest-hosting a parody segment, Samberg referred to Frisbee as “Seth’s nightmare-inducing hellspawn” and “the worst greyhound since the bus.” Fellow Saturday Night Live alum Amy Poehler even waded into the feud, pranking Samberg on her “Good Hang” podcast by pretending Frisbee had died, to which Samberg replied, “Don’t even play, ’cause I’ll be so happy. That dog sucks, dude. That dog is like a rat carcass.”

Now, with Frisbee’s passing, one of the great celebrity faux feuds has come to an end. It never reached the notoriety of Matt Damon vs. Jimmy Kimmel, or the higher-profile Ryan Reynolds/Hugh Jackman feud, but there was something just outrageously funny about a grown man spewing such hateful vitriol against a dog. Now, Samberg is paying the price in the court of public opinion, with fans adding to their shows of support for Meyers wishes like “may it haunt Andy Samberg all the days of his life” and “I hope she haunts Andy Samberg for years to come.” Seems like something a nightmare-inducing hellspawn might just do.

Late Night With Seth Meyers is available to stream on Peacock in the U.S.
