Refreshing a silhouette that has been a fan-favorite for almost 40 years is no easy feat. Looking to abstract detailing and translucent depth, the Swoosh manages it with the Nike Air Max 90 Light Orewood Brown.

At the core of this new look for the 90 is clever manipulation of unconventional textures and modern materials. Moving past traditional mesh and leather, this pair incorporates glossy patent paneling and translucent overlays that give the 36-year-old classic a mirage-like, deconstructed edge.

Perhaps most importantly, though, by keeping the palette grounded in soft neutral tones, Nike ensures the technical updates don’t feel too clinical.

A warm Light Orewood Brown and Sail foundation sets the pair off with a refined start, but the real refinement happens in the material choices. From leather accents along the lacing column to the contrasting misted, translucent TPU overlays, the glossy patent mudguard, and the ristop nylon underlays, this is a feast of textures.

And to further emphasize the clever distribution of textures, Nike designers have used each texture to play with the signature branding throughout the shoe. The classic Swoosh is obscured slightly by the transparent TPU, mirrored at the heel, while the Air Max lettering is overlaid in patent leather, hinting at the branding underneath.

Of course, it’s only right that the design is rounded out by a transparent ice outsole, tying the complex interplay of textures and abstract visuals together in one neat package.
